Veterans: ask how VA Aid & Attendance may cover your in-home care — and how long-term care insurance may reimburse part or all of your costs.

Many East Bay veterans and surviving spouses qualify for VA Aid & Attendance benefits that help pay for in-home care, and a great many families are holding long-term care policies they've never used. We'll walk you through what to ask and what documentation you'll need — at no cost, whether or not you become a client.

Frequently Asked Questions

You Have Questions. We Have Answers.

Can insurance or VA benefits help cover the cost of in-home care?

Often, yes. Contacting us is a great place to start when you're researching how to cover the cost of in-home care. Several long-term care insurance providers offer full or supplemental reimbursement for home care services, and veterans or surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid & Attendance benefits that help pay for care at home.

It's important to know the right questions to ask your carrier or the VA, and we're happy to walk you or the policyholder through them.

How long will it take to get a caregiver?

We can usually complete your free in-home assessment within 48 hours of your call. Once your care plan is set, we'll confirm a start date and match a caregiver to your family's needs and schedule. We'll always give you a straight answer about timing rather than promise a date we can't keep.

Why would I hire a SYNERGY HomeCare caregiver versus a private caregiver for my family?

If you hire privately, you become the employer of the caregiver. The following are just a few of the things you must take into consideration when hiring privately:

  • Once you hire a caregiver privately, you are responsible for all state and federal payroll taxes.
  • You must obtain workers' compensation insurance or make sure your private caregiver comes with insurance. If not, you could be responsible for any injuries claimed to have happened while working at your home.
  • What happens if the private caregiver doesn't show up for work? Are you prepared to stay home and take care of your loved one?
  • Are you able to run a comprehensive criminal background check, and confirm the caregiver is cleared and listed on California's Home Care Aide Registry?
  • Is the private caregiver bonded against theft? Who will supervise them?

These are only some of the challenges of hiring privately. With SYNERGY HomeCare, you do not have to worry about any of these issues.

Are your caregivers licensed and background checked?

Yes. We are a licensed California Home Care Organization — HCO #074700259 — and we're bonded and insured. Every caregiver we send into a home is fingerprinted through LiveScan, cleared by the California Department of Justice, and registered on the state's Home Care Aide Registry before they ever have contact with a client, as California law requires.

What different services do you offer?

SYNERGY HomeCare is proud to offer a full range of non-medical home care services, from a few hours a week of companionship through extended and overnight support. Our office can help you determine the specific services right for your situation. Note that non-medical home care does not include administering medication or any care requiring a licensed medical professional.

Do I have to sign a contract locking me into services?

No. SYNERGY HomeCare is here to meet your needs, and as your needs change, so will the services you receive. Our service agreement reflects this and adapts to meet changing needs.
